A hornbill which differs from all other similar species by the unspotted black wing coverts. The adult male has a large red- orange bill with a well-defined creamy-yellow tip while the adult female has an all black bill. The immature resembles the female, but has a duller bill and indistinct white spotting on the wing covers.
