Adult rooks are distinguished from carrion crows by the bare grey-white skin around the base of their bill. Their communal nesting behaviour gave rise to the term rookery. They probe the ground with their strong bill to feed from earthworms and insect larvae. In captivity, they have been documented as one of several species of birds capable of using tools to obtain a goal.
