The Spotted Eagle-Owl is representative of the 19 species of the gender Bubo, which ranges almost throughout the world. Whereas Barn Owls feed nearly only on rats and mice, Eagle-Owls are much less specialized, preying on small mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles, often swallowed whole. The male feeds the female when it cannot leave the nest and they mate for life. Adult pairs defend their hunting territory very aggressively. They are often harassed by local birds, notably the Grey Go-away-bird.
