A large flightless bird (21 in, female 750g, male 1000g) of the Rallidae family, named Weka by Maori, in imitation of its cry. The species is endemic to New Zealand and was described by Sparrman in 1789, based on specimens collected while voyaging with Captain Cook between 1772 and 1775. Four subspecies are recognized. It is an inquisitive bird, walking quietly, flicking its tail constantly but capable of running fast, neck outstretched, using its beak as a weapon. It feeds on invertebrates and fruit.
